Luigi's
Mansion, Another Masterpiece From Shigeru Miyamoto!
Written By Jason Stolfer
After years and numerous titles
of Mario, Luigi finally steps out of the shadows and gets his own
in Luigi's Mansion for the NINTENDO GAMECUBE. Can Luigi step up
to the plate after the success rate that Mario has accomplished?
Well one person thinks so and his name is Shigeru Miyamoto. With
Mr. Miyamoto at the helm anything that he creates will be a top
seller. Luigi's Mansion is more than your average Mario game. The
game is based on a Ghostbusters theme.
As the game starts out,
Luigi has won a contest that he knew nothing about. The prize was
a Mansion. Mario, shocked by this, went ahead to see this mansion
and meet Luigi there. But when Luigi arrives, Mario is no where
to be found. Luigi decides to go into this dark and spooky mansion
to look for his brother. There he finds a mysterious Professor named
E. Gadd. Not only does Luigi find out that the mansion is haunted
but now he has to go ghost busting through the entire mansion to
find and save his brother, Mario. The Professor equips Luigi with
his Poltergeist 3000 ghost vacuum and a flashlight.
Visually Luigi's Mansion
looks beautiful. Luigi, himself appears to be flawless in detail.
The ghosts have a beautiful clear look to them as they float flawlessly
through the rooms as well as stalk our hero Luigi. Dust and mist
swirl around as it gets swept into the vacuum. In any room or fixture
that you see, the lighting is nearly perfect. Every object seems
to cast a shadow in real-time. Objects such as curtains, tablecloths,
lights, candles, books, picture frames, and so on, are fully interactive.
Just simply activate the vacuum and see what happens. Nothing really
stands out in the entire game. I personally like the room where
the ghost is eating at table while the butler ghosts are bringing
the food out.
There is not much to
mention in the audio department. It's funny to hear Luigi cry when
the ghost spook him. The doors squeak when opening, which gives
you that mysterious feeling. It's also funny when Luigi calls out
for Mario. As for the vacuum, it actually sounds like a normal vacuum.
During gameplay, Luigi
is controlled by the left analog control stick. His vacuum and flashlight
are controlled by the C-stick while the R-button is used to activate
them. The A-button is the action button. When hunting for the ghost,
Luigi must first shine the flashlight on the ghost to scare it.
Once the ghost is scared he then can use the vacuum to vacuum it
up. If the ghost is too powerful the vacuum will over heat and Luigi
will have to find the ghost again. But watch out because if the
ghost scares Luigi, he will creep, cower and cringe on the floor,
and shake like crazy.
Overall, Luigi's Mansion
is a definite must buy. The graphics and detail are far more superior
to any other system with the exception of the Xbox. Nintendo has
finally made a system that will take charge and bring gaming to
the next level.
