Thief
III, Another Sequel To This Great First Person Game!
Written By Thomas Goodwin
A few years ago, Looking
Glass Studios brought Thief: The Dark Project into the gaming world.
With its dark, dreary theme, players entered the role of Garret,
a thief out to make a quick buck. Lurking in shadows and hiding
dead and unconscious guards, Garret makes his fortune as an intriguing
story is unveiled. After a good reception into the gaming world,
the tradition was continued in Thief II: The Metal Age. Now, despite
the transfer of the Thief license to Eidos, the tradition is continued
with Thief III.
After Looking Glass Studios,
developer of the first two Thief games, broke up for lack of finances,
many people were convinced that Thief III would never be completed
and released. Eidos, having served as the publisher for the Thief
series, stepped in and prevented the death of the series by bringing
on Ion Storm as the new developer. Ion Storm, picking up the ball
that Looking Glass dropped, continued development where its predecessor
left off.
Some of the project was
completely replaced, despite the fact that some members of the Looking
Glass Thief team rejoined the task under Ion Storm's flag. The most
noteworthy replacement is that of the game's physics engine. A physics
engine determines how a player can interact with the environment
(such as picking up or breaking objects) and the effect explosions,
gunshots, etc. have on the terrain. While Looking Glass had begun
development of its own engine, Ion Storm felt it would be wise to
use an existing technology. Using Havoc's latest physics engine,
Thief III should be very immersive and should allow players a good
bit of interaction with the environments in the game.
Fans of the series can
expect to see many familiarities between the old Thief games and
the new one. Anticipate the return of the same weapons, and hopefully
a few new ones. The old weapons should include many different types
of arrows, a sword, and of course the blackjack. Garret is returning
as the main character and hopefully some of the questions left open
in Thief II will be answered. The time period will be roughly the
same as well, and of course, the concept will remain the same. Yes,
believe it or not, Garret is still a thief.
The Thief tradition is
scheduled to continue with Thief III thanks to Eidos and Ion Storm.
With Havoc's physics engine, the weapons and story set in motion
by Thief III's predecessors, and the help of both new and old Thief
developers, Thief III should be an awe-inspiring masterpiece and
a thrill to play.
