Role call:
JET BRADLEY
A young, gifted programmer whose knowledge and instincts as a gamer – and a
hacker – help him survive the digital world as he tries to find and rescue his
father, Alan Bradley. Jet and Alan don’t always see eye to eye, but luckily,
courage runs in the family
ALAN BRADLEY
The creator of the original TRON program who is now the Sr. Engineer at
fCon. His mysterious disappearance is the catalyst for the game’s action. He
admires his son Jet’s talents, but wishes the young man would be more
disciplined about his career.
MA3A (ma – THREE - ah)
An A.I. program created by Alan to assist in the development of digitization
technology. She does not understand Alan’s disappearance and thinks Jet is
simply a newer, upgraded version of Alan. Resourceful and kind, there are many
secrets embedded in her code.
MERCURY
T his is a flashy, confident game bot with an unknown User. She is the light
cycle champion of the digital world who befriends Jet.
J.D. THORNE
Thorne found out that Alan had rediscovered the digitization technology, and
sold the secret to fCon. While demonstrating the technology, Thorne was
digitized improperly and corrupted during transfer. This corruption has not only
driven Thorne mad, but it also threatens the very fabric of the digital world.
BYTE
An upgrade of Bit from the movie, Byte is a program sent by Ma3a to help Jet
acclimate to the digital world. Byte is quite full of himself, and thinks Users
are overrated.
ICP KERNEL
Heavily armored leader of the Intrusion Countermeasure Programs (ICPs), the
Kernel uses whatever means necessary to maintain order and control on the
network. Even without his tank like armor, he is a formidable foe, displaying
agility, disc expertise and superior shielding techniques.
I-NO
A relic of a program trapped in a forgotten sector, I-No is ahead of his time.
Unfortunately, ahead of his time is still way behind our time. He can provide
access to restricted areas.
The game starts out with Jet talking on the phone to his dad while playing
TRON the arcade game blah blah blah… Alen gets attacked and the phone goes dead.
Jet runs up to the lab to see what is going on and POOF!! You’re in TRON now… Of
course like most games you start in the training area where you learn how to
crawl before you can walk.
Along the way you will need "things" such as weapon upgrades (subroutines),
power up items and such (optimizers, compression routines, and abilities, like a
stealth routine,( to name a few). These can be found at the "Internet Hub" a
gathering area for programs.
These, and all the weapons, plus their subroutines all take up RAM, and
depending on what kind of system you are in at the time, will limit the amount
of RAM you have to utilize.
Weapons involved are the "disc" of course which you can throw or throw and
guide, remembering of course that when weaponless you have to take whatever your
opponents dish out to you. It is possible to bounce off walls when they are not
hit dead on (or even close to dead on). It can also be used to block or deflect
incoming attacks. Two upgrades for the disc include the ability to send it
around corners and to make it explode with shrapnel. The "Rod" is used primarily
by the Light Cyclists that you use like a two handed spear. Two upgrades for
this weapon allow you to charge and blast like the plasma pistol in Halo, and a
sniper/rail gun with near instantaneous distance travel. There is the "Ball", a
grenade like weapon used by the followers of the corrupted user. Its main
ability allows you to stick them to walls as they do not fly very far when you
throw it. Two upgrades for the "Ball" give you a small "ball" launcher (makes me
think of NERF) and the second upgrade shoots a cluster of "balls." The fourth
and final main weapon is a "claw/mesh" which lashes out and leaches energy and
health from other programs (however none of which goes to you as I guess the
"claw/mesh" recycles the energy to power itself). Its upgrades give it the
ability to multi-click, launching multiple "leaches", or a guided missle effect
similar to the redeemer in Unreal Tournament.

In the multi-player side of things, the multiplayer games are set up like a
sports stadium, or gladiatorial arena as it is being referred to, where other
non-players can come watch the competition which will revolve around the use of
the mighty "disc." Thankfully, Tron will ship with a Level Editor program so you
can make the most out of the multiplayer setting.
Graphically speaking, Lith Tech has added the "classic TRON glow" to their
Triton game engine that, since it was developed in conjunction with nVIDIA, will
only be available to GeForce 3 and 4 users, as the video card itself will be
rendering the "glow" in real time; However, as you will see at the bottom of
this article, other video cards are listed as compatible with the game, but
whether or not that means they will be able to use the "glow" is a different
story.
