The Devil Cometh Once Again

By Andrew Mroczkowsk

Capcom has revealed that they will be producing another sequel to one of their best selling video game console franchises, Devil May Cry. This being the fourth installment for a game that shares its birth to one of Capcom’s other offspring, Resident Evil. Devil May Cry 1, when in development, was planned to be a clone of the RE series. The final product had grown out of its brother’s mold and matured into a game that has gathered an impressive, loyal fan base and for good reason. The game boasted some fast-paced, intense control and combo action unlike its Resident Evil counterpart. It also set forth some unique character design, stunning graphics, and rebellious, not heroic, storyline.

This time around, Capcom has decided to let its fans experience its creation alongside Sony’s new child, the Playstation 3 multimedia game console containing its new cell chip and architecture. Some might say, “Oh no,” not another sequel on a new system, but fans of the previous incarnations, which were for the Playstation 2 console, would tell you that there is no spoiling in this good thing. Once again, Capcom has decided to keep its new Devil May Cry 4, a Sony exclusive.

Capcom only seems to bring bigger and better things with each new Devil May Cry game.  Now Devil May Cry 4 not only seems set to follow this line, but is gathering to really wow its fans with the power of Sony’s new console to back it up.

As of press, not much was disclosed concerning Devil May Cry 4. Out of a brief demo sequence, some insight was given and even more questions to be asked. One thing is for sure, the game will once again be starring Dante. Capcom’s bad-ass, white-haired, red trench coat wearing, dual gun slinging, long-sword slicing demon hunter. Dante’s main concern is to relinquish evil from the world in all of its demonic form. In the demo shown, Dante is seen pointing his guns at the camera which is set in third person, then jumping into the air pulling out his sword and coming down with a swift blow knocking the camera down and eventually the video from the camera turns to snow. This touts that Dante will be able to again be able to switch between guns and sword with ease and use his impressive skill moves and aerial tactics to juggle his foes and wreak havoc down upon his enemies sending them to the depths of hell.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well for Devil May Cry 4, no book is big enough to do the talking for this game. In its graphics compartment, Devil May Cry 4 looks to push the envelope in visual style and life-like movement. It can be seen that special emphasis was taken with detail and Dante’s profile from each strand of his waving hair and free flowing clothes to his many facial expressions shown in such a short clip. It is uncertain as to whether the images shown are from actual game segments or not nor if it is yet running on real Playstation 3 hardware. In either case, Capcom seems bound to impress with the release of its graphically superior, popular, and just simply cool game, Devil May Cry 4 which is set for release sometime in the second quarter 2007.

We all just have to wait for E3 this year to see if Capcom rolls up its sleeves to check if they’re hiding something and if they’re ready to come out swinging alongside Sony with yet another great game. Time will tell.
